About us

We are an independent company and devote ourselves to the form we call Bastard Circus. We developed this new form because, some people say, we do not follow the traditional style of circus and others say we do not follow the contemporary style either. Furthermore none of the company are from a circus family or at least they never practiced circus professionally. However we feel that more than of one of them were artists of some kind or other!

Life is a circus.

We are searhing for a style which combines the circus arts with the theatrical arts and hope to elegantly cover the cracks that may appear in such a endeavour. We intend to mix our circus skills with the drama in an easy and organic way which should highlight the plot much more powerfully. Thus we will avoid a simplistic demonstration of our skills as seen in any traditional circus and furthermore we lack structure and discipline of contemporary circus.

We are three…

Lui and Antuán where born in the eighties in the small southern Spanish town of Huelva. While Madrid was moving and growing fast, in Huelva Lui and Antuan learned from the sporadic visits from odd touring circus or from the occasional passing gypsy with his famous goat act.

Antuán has been shaped by many Spanish cities. However it was the city of Santiago de Compostela which has touched him most and that has seen him grow as a teacher and artists.

The restlessness energy that is Lui forced him on a endless journey which began 10 years ago. He would drink from the fountain of knowledge and leave memories of his work where they allowed him. Lui has drunk from many fountains in many places including Brazil, Greece and France.

The third, Djammal was king of the seventies. He was born in the city of Lisbon and has traveled half way around the world collecting the skills and knowledge which make him the man he is today. He has performed in may countries including England, Brazil and Cape Verde. By chance it was the gypsy with his famous goat act which woke the butterflies in this little anxious boys stomach.

Call it coincidence, fate, good luck or even bad luck, the company was born in the city of Santiago de Compostela in 2008. Which ever wind it was that brought us together, we are finally united and this is only the beginning.
